Calling all Greek life students! An eventful week is approaching, starting on Oct. 14 and continuing through  Oct. 20. This week will include a ton of games and activities that Greek life students can take part in.  Also, throughout the whole week the three coordinators: Rebecca Teitelbaum, Spencer Hall, and Octavio Villalvazo, will be hosting  penny wars. This means throughout the week people can donate some change to their chosen organization. Whichever Greek organization can raise the most money will receive all the earnings for their chosen philanthropy.  

“It is an opportunity for those in letters to show the greater community of Rohnert Park and Sonoma County what Greek life is about beyond the social events through donations and public service,” said Rebbca Teitelbaum, one of the coordinators of this week. 

To kick off the weekend there will be a barbeque held at Denali Ct. at 6 p.m. for all Greek life students to enjoy some delicious food as well as spend some time together. 

The following day will be banner supply day starting at 11:00 a.m. This will consist of a scavenger hunt around campus where students will be searching for supplies in order to make a banner. The banner is supposed to encompass their chapter by loading the banner with their organizations symbols as well as colors. 

Wed., Oct. 16 Dan Faill, a Greek speaker will be coming to the ballrooms. Faill will be discussing how Greek students can break free from the stereotypes that surround the concept of sororities and fraternities. He will also be speaking on how to motivate members to achieve their full potential as well as emphasize the importance of making good decisions. 

The next day will be jam packed  with two events. The first will be a can castle competition which will begin at 12 p.m. Students will use canned foods in order to make these castles. Those canned foods will then be donated to Redwood Empire Food Bank. Later that day at 7 p.m., there will be a multicultural sorority and fraternity council   (MSFC) step and stroll in ballroom A. 

On Fri., Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m. there will be dodgeball game at the Mt. Everest gym between the different greek organizations in order to incorporate some friendly competition into the eventful week. The following day, there will be a basketball game in the Mt. Everset gym at 11:00 a.m. After, students can expect a tug-o-war game at the same location at 2:00 p.m. between the different organizations. 

To finish off Greek Week, on Sun., Oct. 20 there will be a Greek day of service. This will show the community that Greek life spends a lot of their time giving back and doing things for the greater good of their chosen charity. 

The last event of the week will be a kickball game at 12:00 p.m. in the Seawolf Diamond. This kickball game will bring the students of Greek life back together before the week fully ends with one last entertaining competition. 

The purpose behind this week is to show the community that Greek life does more than what most may think. 

Greek Week also aims to promote Greek unity and Greek life on campus by forming teams throughout the different organizations which pushes students to meet new people on campus. This will also show no matter the letters everyone wears, they are all form one big community. 

“Greek life has so much more to offer other than an amazing social network on campus. It offers community service through philanthropy and preparation in real life skills such as accountability and leadership,” said Teitelbaum. 

Coming into college is a scary experience in and of itself. Greek life provides college students with a sense of belonging. It aids people in finding their “home away from home”. Not only that but it is comforting to be able to recognize some familiar faces as you walk around campus or even in one’s classes. 

“I came into college not knowing anyone and the first few weeks were very rough for me, however after I went through recruitment I found my forever friends in various different Greek chapters and that is something I will be forever grateful for,” said Lia Gee a member of the Alpha Xi Delta sorority. 

Greek Week is a great opportunity for those apart of Greek life on campus to get to know some new faces outside of their chapters while playing various different games. Come join in on the fun!
