Computer Science Department holds showcase for final projects

On Weds. April 28, the Computer Science Department held a virtual showcase to show students’ advanced software design projects from one of their classes this semester. Sonoma State seniors in the CS 470 class got a chance to show off their projects that they have been working on for the entirety of the Spring semester.

Cultural commencement ceremonies set to continue despite the pandemic

Starting the week of May 14, Sonoma State will be hosting a series of cultural commencement ceremonies via zoom for graduating students that identify with their own represented communities.

Club sports set to resume in-person

With Covid-19 cases coming to a slow halt in Sonoma County, club sports at Sonoma State are slowly starting to be allowed to resume their regular activities. Although some activities can resume, clubs have to abide by certain covid guidelines that the school has put out. This past week, club sports officials have received an email from the Club Sports Advisor Michael Dominguez, with rules and guidelines for how they can return to play safely.

CareerFest provides great opportunities for students’ futures

CareerFest began last week and continues this week for all Sonoma State students and Alumni. CareerFest is a great opportunity for students to connect with potential employers , learning about and potentially receiving internship and job opportunities.

Alumni Takeovers provide post-graduation information

On March 18, the Sonoma State Career Center put on one of many Alumni Takeover events that will take place on their Instagram page. This event is aimed toward students and prospective students to give them a glimpse of what graduates’ lives are like after their time at SSU. Each takeover consists of a Sonoma State Alumni using Instagram stories to take a look at their daily lives.

SSU hosts virtual grad fair

Last week, Sonoma State held a virtual grad fair on March 10 and 11 for all students that will be graduating at the end of Spring semester. The grad fair is usually held in person, however due to the pandemic, this year the grad fair had to be held virtually.

Starting in early Sept. Scientists discovered a new variant of Covid-19 in California that showed signs of being deadlier and more infectious than other variants of the virus.

Sonoma State University is putting on Town Hall events this month on the impacts of Covid-19 and how it has affected people. These Town Hall’s will be held on zoom and will be available for staff and faculty only.

Campus Recreation Center to open for limited outdoor activities

The Rec Center has been closed to students for the entire academic year up until this point. Set to open Monday March 1, the outdoor space will be open to up to 10 students at a time, with all occupants required to maintain social distancing throughout their workout. The space will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All that students will need in order to use the space is to make a reservation online.

The Student Health Activities Club: promoting healthy habits and educating Seawolves

The Student Health Activities Club, (SHAC), is a club that partners with the Student Health Center in order to help promote healthy habits for Sonoma State University's students

Theodore Bussell, SHAC president, explains, “Originally, we started as an advisory committee to the Student Health Center, but our club has grown to do a lot more,” he said. “We promote wellness activities for students, and we also provide opportunities to learn about different health-related career paths by inviting guest speakers to share their experiences at our meetings.”

COVID-19 variants and vaccines: new and developing information

First discovered in December 2020, three new variants of the COVID-19 virus have emerged around the world. These variants are commonly referred to as the UK variant, the South Africa variant, and the Brazil variant. These variants have started to spread rapidly through the world since they have been discovered. Although they are talked about a lot in the news, there is still an abundance of questions that remain to be answered about the three new variants of COVID-19.
