The SSU employee's misguided request for a student employee to remove her cross necklace at freshmen orientation in late June is now being treated as a religious discrimination case. Joyce Suzuki, SSU'sTitle IX coordinator and managing director of employee relations and compliance, is handling the investigation after meeting with the student, Audrey Jarvis, and her representative Hiram Sasser last Monday.
Sonoma State made national headlines earlier this week in response to an Associated Students Productions employee's request for Audrey Jarvis, a junior working freshman orientation, to remove her cross necklace. Jarvis is now working with Liberty Institute, a nonprofit legal organization defending religious liberty, to seek a religious accommodation from SSU.
