Lacrosse is quickly becoming one of the more popular sports nationwide at both the college and professional levels, and the men’s lacrosse team at Sonoma State University is making the most of its time together. Fueled by strong camaraderie, team chemistry, and their “blue-collar” mindset, the Seawolves have put together a solid season with key wins both at home and on the road while emphasizing hard work and commitment to the program.
Led by head coach Ben Hewitt, the Seawolves have posted a strong 2026 season with a 7–4 record, highlighted by wins over programs such as Stanford University, University of Southern California, University of Minnesota, and University of Oregon.
One of the most memorable moments of the season came when the Seawolves traveled to Eugene to face Oregon and University of California, Los Angeles on March 23 and 24. Sonoma State handled business in both matchups, winning by a combined score of 32–17. Senior Benen Powers led the offensive surge with 11 goals and six assists across the two games, junior Riley Corcoran recorded 21 shots against Oregon, and senior Mason Colaizzi contributed eight goals and two assists during the road trip.
Midfielder Anders Bostrom, a junior from Livermore and a communications major, said Sonoma State was not originally on his radar until midway through his senior year of high school.
“I knew a couple guys from my hometown who came here to play lacrosse, and they convinced me to come to a prospect camp here in the fall of 2022. It was there where I really got a sense of the competition club lacrosse brings and the environment Sonoma offered,” Bostrom said.
Being a student-athlete comes with the responsibility of managing time both in the classroom and on the field.
“Our coach always preaches the fact that we’re all here to be students at the end of the day, so it’s important for all of us to balance our sports and education,” Bostrom said. “Our coaches are all teachers outside of the team, so they offer their help where they can during tutoring sessions held once a week during the fall.”
The Seawolves now look to carry their momentum into next season, with hopes of qualifying for the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national tournament and competing for a championship.
