Lights, camera, action! Sonoma State’s Film Club is looking for passionate movie lovers to create films on campus.
The club was founded last semester by Angeline Kimbo, a junior cinematic arts major and vice president of Film Club. Many classes on campus teach students about criticizing media and how it’s made, but only the Studio Blue course is where students can really get in there and make media. Kimbo comments, “It’s really good for us to learn about media and how media works, but I think it’s just as important for us to empower people to create their own media.” Film Club offers a chance for students across all majors to participate in the act of filmmaking. “It’s so much more than just our department. We have theater majors. We have music majors. You need all of those things to create media,” says Kimbo, “This is potentially portfolios for all these different groups of people on campus.”
Although the club is relatively new, they’re eager to make their mark on the campus community. “We want to spread our name out there and tell everyone about how SSU is incorporating a lot of departments and people together for our club,” says Cristian Castro, a sophomore cinematic arts major and treasurer of Film Club. “As for our goals, we want to make movies, films, short stories, anything. We have time, we have participants ready to go and work, and we’re really excited to see how everything turns out.” Another goal that the club hopes to achieve by next semester is to make a limited series or feature-length film crafted entirely by the members.
If you are interested in gaining experience on a real film set, Film Club is working with Daunt Haunt Productions, an independent production company specializing in horror and thriller, to work on a three-day shoot in Bodega Bay. They’re currently in pre-production and still looking for students to participate. Even if you aren’t an actor, production assistance is always needed and is a great entry-level position for the field. Students who are interested can email Angeline Kimbo ([email protected]) before March 26 to receive more information on how to apply.
To participate in Film Club, you can join them every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in Salazar 1052. Stay up to date with all updates and meeting information by following the @ssu.filmclub Instagram page.
For now, the club’s message to students is simple. The credits haven’t rolled yet.
