I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’d kill to watch brand new episodes of Dexter over the summer instead of the annual fall schedule. Oh wait, the new season is set to premiere early starting this Sunday, June 30 you say? I was only joking about all that murder stuff before; let’s leave that up to America’s favorite serial killer himself, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall).

With the aftermath of season seven’s shocking ending it appears that many of Dexter’s problems have now been solved, although one can’t say the same for his beloved sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter). The lieutenant of Miami Metro Homicide has surely had her ups and downs throughout the show, but it looks like things are at their absolute worse now.

In a trailer for the upcoming season Dexter finds three different cases of pills Debra is taking including Xanax, Paxil and Adderall, as well as a confrontation where she reveals her hatred for him stating ‘I shot the wrong person.’ After confirming she loves her adopted brother last season and proving how far she will go to keep him safe, obviously things have changed.

On top of this there appears to be a suspicious person that Debra is tracking on a case, whom Dexter is concerned she may be sleeping with. Described as a tough bail jumper, the character will be portrayed by actor Rhys Coiro (Entourage’s Billy Walsh).

Among other notable guest stars is Charlotte Rampling who will play as Evelyn Vogel, a neuro-psychiatrist that specializes in child psychopaths. A seemingly important character that may appear throughout the season’s entirety, Vogel will bring out insight describing a serial killer’s lack of empathy and questioning Dexter about matters of the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Another less important yet perhaps more recognizable guest star will be Sean Patrick Flanery (The Boondock Saints) as Jacob Elroy, an ex-cop who owns a private investigation company in Miami.

At the end of the trailer, we witness Debra announcing that she wants to make an official statement about something, which from what viewers know could mean one or two things. She plans to either spill the beans on the incident at the end of season seven, or reveal Dexter’s secret, yet one can’t be sure that either one will happen and this may simply be a bluff.

There are also a few other interesting things to consider about this season of Dexter. Earlier this year on March 1, Jennifer Carpenter tweeted that Michael C. Hall would be directing the second episode of season eight, which will be his directorial debut. Not too long after that on April 18, Showtime officially announced that this will be the final season of Dexter.

Now I’m sure many of you are curious about a few theories out there and I would like to share a couple of mine. One character I’ve had my eye on is Angel Batista (David Zayas) ever since his plans to retire as sergeant of Miami Metro and become a restaurant owner last season.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it seems the overall consensus is that Batista will not stay retired for very long. I truly believe that he may have a big role in the end game of the show and could very well be the next character to discover something strange about Dexter.

Lastly, there is the ever more intriguing mention of the return of guest star Yvonne Strahovski, who played as Dexter’s murderer ex-girlfriend Hannah McKay. The show runners might have big plans for Hannah, as many people may be thinking that if Dexter is ever forced to run, that the most probable outcome would be to escape with her to Argentina.

The main problem that would persist is whether Dexter is still in love with Hannah after the events of season seven and if their old dream could ever become a reality. With this being the final season, it seems like one can’t help but be concerned for Dexter’s fate. Will he live or will he die? It is the beginning of the end this season on Dexter.
