What does the home page of the Sonoma State University housing website say? “#1 Best College Housing in California.” I would say that I agree with that. SSU provides convenient, affordable housing options for all students. Whether you are a first year, transfer, or graduate student, there are choices for everyone.
This is my second semester here after transferring, and I live in Sauvignon Village. I chose it because it offered a single room, and it has a nice living room and a decent kitchen. Another thing that I like about Sauv is how close it is to campus. It is slightly closer to the Student Center and the Rec than Beaujolais and Tuscany.
I can’t help but notice every day, when I’m either walking to class or anywhere else on campus, that I pass some of the other Sauv buildings that aren’t being used. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it’s nice and quiet most of the time around my apartment. On the other hand, it sometimes feels eerie to be walking past some of the dormant, light-lacking apartments.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t take away from my overall positive experience with campus housing so far. Now that students are planning where they are going to live next year, I hope to snag a spot in Tuscany, if not Beaujolais. It really just feels livelier to me over there. No offense, Sauv.
I asked my fellow Sauv suitemate, Dalton Bonnington, about his experience with campus housing so far. Bonnington, 20, is in his first semester here at SSU, and has already acclimated to on campus living. “Compared to other colleges, the apartments here are way better,” Bonnington said. “I definitely think that SSU should advertise their housing more so that they can fill up more of the currently empty apartments.” Bonnington was initially in a rough housing situation at the beginning of the year, but is grateful to the REACH (please clarify what REACH is) staff who helped him through it. “The housing situation that I got into initially was not ideal, but the one I’m in now is much better. The housing people who helped me were really great.”
The housing here was one of the main factors that brought me to SSU. Knowing that there are plenty of options available in different living communities is a huge plus. The Tuscany apartments are two-story units and have the biggest kitchens in any of the villages, including a bar with barstools, making them great for spending time with your fellow suitemates. If prioritizing your own personal space is more your speed, then Beaujolais, with its four single rooms in every apartment is for you. All in all, the housing is a huge asset for the university, but how long will those empty apartments stay empty?
