Students gathered on Wednesday, Nov. 12, from 6-8 p.m. for Associated Students’ latest event, Boards and Boba, an activity held in the student center ballrooms that brings students together to play board games and drink boba tea. Winners of each game were rewarded with a free Thai Tea Boba or Strawberry Fruit Tea from ThirsTea, a bubble tea shop minutes from campus. An interview with Diego Romero, the Event Director of Associated Students at SSU, reveals the behind-the-scenes organizing for the event. 

According to Romero, Boards and Boba is an event that grew from an idea where students can relax and have fun with friends while enjoying local boba tea. The comfortable environment allows students to have some friendly competition and set the vibe for the night. The games used in the event, such as Uno, Exploding Kittens, Settlers of Catan, and Monopoly, bring a sense of nostalgia for the students. The variety of board games brought was planned out extensively by Associated Students as they tried to think of games that students would enjoy playing.

Planning the event involves reaching out to a local vendor, filling out the necessary paperwork, and planning the specific orders for what boba flavors to bring. Associated Students follows a thought-out timeline on the day of to ensure the event goes according to plan.

The turnout has remained consistent. “Students come to the events we put on and tend to stay for the whole experience,” said Romero. The most recent Boards and Boba had a similar number of participants compared to last year, showing no decline in interest.

Boards and Boba’s relaxed atmosphere, with childhood favorite games and drinks from a local boba shop, continues to be a needed recharge as the end of the semester sits on the horizon. Check out future events held by Associated Students at https://as.sonoma.edu/.
