After a devastating spring semester in the rearview mirror — without any intercollegiate athletics on campus — many incoming freshmen, transfer students and returning students are asking themselves: What’s next, Seawolves? Sonoma State University sport clubs are here to stay for good. Unlike intramural sports, club sports function like NCAA teams with tryouts, practices and games.
These sport clubs are student-run organizations that emphasize leadership experience as well as athletic competition. They offer opportunities for those who want to continue competing after high school or for students who want to play at a higher level. Members handle everything from coaching decisions to fundraising. Clubs are “run like an NCAA team” but remain flexible as student-led groups.
If you’re a former high school athlete who never got the chance to compete at the next level, this is a great opportunity to get involved. Joining these clubs can benefit both your social skills and competitiveness. Without athletics or physical activity, students may experience a decline in their physical and mental well-being. Being part of a close-knit team built on trust and mutual support is also one of the best ways to create lasting friendships.
Most sport clubs require tryouts at the beginning of each semester to compete against other universities throughout the country. This process ensures limited roster spots are filled with skilled and dedicated players, while maintaining a high level of competition. Tryouts provide a structured way to replace players who leave a particular club.
There are a variety of club sport opportunities available for students on campus, including baseball, lacrosse, rugby, volleyball, cheer, badminton, basketball and soccer.
The key difference between intramural and club sports is competition and commitment. Club sports are more competitive, structured and require tryouts as well as a greater time commitment for practices, training and leadership roles. Intramural sports, on the other hand, are designed for friendly competition, do not require tryouts and are played exclusively on campus with a focus on community and social connection.
Clubs are always looking for committed students interested in playing, leading or managing. Please be aware that tryouts may be required depending on the sport. If you’re interested in competing in club sports, contact Mike Dominguez at [email protected] for information on how to join.
At Sonoma State, club sports are more than athletics — they’re about building lasting connections and leadership skills that can help you achieve your future goals and dreams.
