With summer break behind us, Sonoma State steps into another new, yet somewhat uncertain, year involving sports. New freshmen, transfer students and returning students are likely wondering the same thing: What is campus life going to be like without the hustle and bustle of intercollegiate athletics? For now, students, faculty, and staff will go about their days without the big basketball or baseball rival from out of town coming in for a marquee match up.
While there won’t be any mainstream athletics on campus for the time being, there are still various intramural sports opportunities available for students to take part in. On Aug. 21, the Sonoma State Campus Recreation Department hosted RecFest to showcase what the Rec Center has to offer.
The Student Center Plaza and Person Lawn were full of activity, featuring everything from a large inflatable obstacle course to information booths run by Rec Center staff. Students had the chance to visit the intramural sports booth to learn more about this fall’s offerings.
There are two ways for students to enjoy intramural sports this fall. The “Pros League” is designed for those who played sports competitively in high school or participated in outside club or travel sports. The “Joes League” is aimed at students who simply want to have fun and enjoy their time playing.
Intramural leagues this semester include:
4v4 flag football: registration deadline Sept. 3; start date Sept. 8; managers’ meeting Sept. 4 at 4 p.m.
6v6 volleyball: registration deadline Sept. 3; start date Sept. 8; managers’ meeting Sept. 4 at 5 p.m.
5v5 kickball: registration deadline Sept. 17; start date Sept. 22; managers’ meeting Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
5v5 basketball: registration deadline Oct. 8; start date Oct. 13; managers’ meeting Oct. 9 at 4 p.m.
5v5 indoor soccer: registration deadline Oct. 8; start date Oct. 13; managers’ meeting Oct. 9 at 5 p.m.
Doubles pickleball: registration deadline Oct. 22; start date Oct. 27; managers’ meeting Oct. 23 at 4 p.m.
In addition to leagues, the Rec Center will host several unique one-day special events, including esports, fantasy football, disc golf, and a 3-point contest. Intramural sports at Sonoma State give students the opportunity to spend time outside, in the gym, on the court – and even on Sundays watching NFL Redzone.
