The Lobofest Smash Brothers Ultimate is here! Director of Student Involvement, Mo Phillips, alongside the Smash Club advisor, is hosting a Super Smash Brothers video game tournament in Student Center Ballroom A on Feb. 7 at 5:00 p.m. here at Sonoma State University.

This is the second annual “Glitched” tournament at Sonoma State and it has been a huge hit in the past. While there are some changes from last years, the excitement still remains.

“We learned a lot from the first one that seemed to last about 7 hours because we did not limit how many could play,” said Philips. “Now we limit the sign ups to about 60 that can play in the main tournament, however we offer space for people to bring their own games, play little mini tournaments on the side or to just stay and watch the tournament. We have commentators who are really excited to be part of the event and we have raffle prizes and food for all who attend while supplies last.”

A single-elimination bracket will be set up for all the participants. Everyone will be ranked based on their known skill level. In other words, some smash club players will be ranked higher than others based on their participation in the club. All contestants will compete in a best of 3 games with a 5 minute timer against each opponent. However, there is also a losers bracket for people that did not get off to a great start and from there they can battle their way back to the top. Competitors can pick from one of the few pre staged selections: Battlefield, Final Destination, Pokemon Stadium 2, Smashville, Fountain of Dreams, Kalos, or Yoshi’s Island. The loser of the round will select the next stage. Rock-paper-scissors will take place if there is a disagreement on starting sides.

Participants will be playing on the hybrid console called the Nintendo Switch. It can be used as a console and a portable gaming device with multiple modes of use.

It will be a great opportunity for students who enjoy Super Smash Brothers to enjoy their weekend and forget about their school work for a period of time. It will be fun because you will get to engage with new people that also have a love for the game at a competitive level.

The best gamers, first and second place, will be able to walk away with $25 or $50 wolfbuck cash and bragging rights. Come participate in this event to see if you have what it takes to walk away with these amazing prizes!

“Tournament participation is free, just bring your SSU ID card. Raffles will be held throughout the event,” says the Sonoma State Glitched gaming website.

Students can sign up for the tournament at https://www.sonoma.edu/calender/glitched-ssu-gaming-tournament. Sign ups are limited to the first 60 people, so RSVP today. Students will have to follow a series of steps to enter the tournament. Competitors will need a team name, Sonoma State email, and the last step will ask if those signing up would like to help at future Smash Brothers tournaments. There are no sign ups once the tournament begins.

For this tournament, Seawolves will only be playing Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, however next year could be a totally different story. So, for students who like to game but maybe aren’t the biggest fan of this series, there is always next year.

Some other games in previous tournaments included, “…are Madden 19, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate and Soul Caliber VI,” said the Sonoma State Glitched gaming website.

Are you up for the challenge? The hosts are excited to see all of you out there.

“Right now we still have spaces. If students want to register to play, they can go to their Engage@SSU page, or if they have not yet migrated from Sonomasync, they can go to this site to get onto our new site Engage@SSU:  http://getinvolved.sonoma.edu/engagessu,” said Phillips.
