College students at SSU have some of the busiest lives during the week, whether they’re in a lecture, at a club meeting, putting in hours at work, or studying. However, once Friday comes around and the hustle and bustle comes to a screeching halt, many seek to travel, explore, and find something new to experience, giving themselves a breather from the textbooks and their studies.
Rohnert Park, being in the heart of the North Bay, allows students to have nearly immediate access to the attractions not only in town but also the ones in Santa Rosa and Petaluma. All three cities are unique in their own ways and are promising settings for anyone looking to have good times and even better vibes.
#1: Rohnert Park: The popular option amongst students due to its proximity to campus, Rohnert Park, can provide all-day entertainment whether that is getting together with friends at Double Decker Lanes and hitting a few strikes, taking to the mini golf course at Scandia, or heading to several restaurants or pubs in the Downtown Cotati area. Trade Winds, known for their karaoke, billiards, and dancing is at the top of the list for SSU students. Mombo’s Pizza is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a stellar lunch or dinner with fair prices and a pleasant experience.
Carl Zelaya, a third-year Communications major, said, “Korbel Champagne Cellars and Rodney Strong Vineyards offer gorgeous vineyard views and noteworthy wine tastings. The Civic Center Park is a solid choice, having large open spaces for picnics and sports courts for tennis, basketball, and more”.
#2: Santa Rosa: Santa Rosa is the largest city of the three by far, and it is plentiful in its excursion offerings. Multiple top-tier movie theatres are located in the town, and there are incredible food options throughout. Whether you’re looking for street tacos, noodles, or a burger, Santa Rosa has you covered. Justin Hou, a fourth-year kinesiology major, said, “My number one pick for those 21 and older is Russian River Brewery in Santa Rosa. If you’re trying to have a laid back time, have good food and local beer, this is one spot you have to try”—breathtaking hiking trails and serene natural beauty line the outskirts of the city. The Russian River is so close that it’s a great option for a kayaking trip with friends.
“If you are looking for a local coffee shop with a cozy and comfy vibe, check out Aroma Roasters in Downtown Santa Rosa. The staff is friendly, the ambiance is lovely, and the coffee tastes really good,” said Hou. Santa Rosa doesn’t fall short in practically any category.
#3: Petaluma: Just 15 minutes south of Rohnert Park, Petaluma is a quaint yet active town full of different businesses and views—Brewsters Beer Garden, Lombardi’s Deli, Boulevard 14 Cinema, and many downtown spots worth visiting. Petaluma’s downtown area along the river is the site for many activities that could make up a whole day’s worth of activities.
The Petaluma Outlet Mall is another popular destination amongst the community; Nike, Zumiez, Adidas, and many other popular stores and brands are present here. Petaluma isn’t called “the egg capital of the world” for nothing; tons of beautiful, rolling farmland on the city’s Western side makes for a nice weekend drive while listening to your favorite playlist.
