On March 13. and 14, the Sonoma State University women’s softball team faced the Cal State San Marcos Cougars in a pivotal California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) series at Marv Mays Field in Santa Rosa, California.
The series highlighted contrasting performances, with each team securing a win. In the opening game of the doubleheader, Sonoma State dominated with a decisive 10-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos.
The Seawolves’ offense was relentless, amassing 15 hits and capitalizing on the Cougars errors. Led by Amari Houstan who had 4 hits and 3 RBI she and her teammates created on base opportunities one after another.
Another notable day at the plate was had by Iris Bejanero who ended the day with 3 hits and 2 runs and helped lead the offensive charge.
Pitcher Charlie Johnson delivered a stellar performance, earning her 10th win of the season with a shutout, allowing only two hits and striking out three.
The Seawolves’ lineup was formidable, with multiple players contributing to the offensive onslaught. Despite the lopsided score, the Cougars remained resilient, aiming to rebound in the subsequent game.
The second game of the doubleheader saw a shift in momentum. Cal State San Marcos narrowly defeated Sonoma State with a 4-3 win. The Cougars’ pitcher, Dahlia Fink, earned her sixth win of the season, while the Seawolves’ Nichole Sarra took the loss.
The game was tightly contested, with both teams showcasing strong defensive plays and strategic offense. Despite the Seawolves’ efforts, they couldn’t overcome the Cougars late-game surge, resulting in a split for the day’s doubleheader.
On the following day, Cal State San Marcos secured the series win by sweeping the doubleheader. In the first game, the Cougars won 3-0, with pitcher Jayline Sloss earning her seventh win of the season. The final game concluded with a 4-2 victory for the Cougars, as they capitalized on key moments to extend their winning streak.
This sweep improved Cal State San Marcos’s record to 20-5 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA, while Sonoma State’s record moved to 15-16 overall and 5-11 in conference play. The Seawolves’ performance during this series showcased both their potential and areas needing improvement. As the season progresses, Sonoma State aims to build on their strengths and address challenges to climb up the CCAA standings.
