The Sonoma State women’s Golf team has had a season full of ups and downs up to this point. Talia Gutman, a junior on the women’s golf team has been one of the main contributors to the team ever since she joined in the fall of 2022.
She started her Sonoma career by winning freshman of the year in the CCAA, then following it up with consistent strong performances in both the classroom and on the course. This season the team has had strong performances that was highlighted by a win at their home tournament in October. They have also had some sub-par finishes as well as they are still looking to find their groove when it comes to consistent high level play.
“So far this season, we’ve definitely left some opportunities on the table in the tournaments we’ve played. However, I believe we have the skills and potential to perform better.” Gutman said, “There’s still a lot of season left, and we’re motivated to keep pushing and finish strong at SSU. We’re excited to improve and give it our all in the remaining tournaments.”
As with all of the other athletic teams at Sonoma, dealing with budget cuts has been at the forefront of this semester’s play. While it might be easy to let news like this negatively affect a team’s mood, the women on the golf team are keeping a positive mindset.
“Even though we are devastated by the news, we’ve really come together as a team. Despite the challenges, we’re persevering and staying strong. The adversity has only made us more determined. We’re focused on finishing the season on a high note and supporting each other every step of the way,” Gutman said.
Keeping this kind of strong mindset can be a make or break for a team especially as the postseason approaches. Due to these tough times and the possibility that the end of many Sonoma State journeys might be coming to a close soon, it can force us to reflect on our time here at Sonoma and what has made it special to us.
“What’s made Sonoma special to me is definitely my team and the coaching staff. I honestly wouldn’t have enjoyed my time there nearly as much without them. The support, camaraderie and guidance have made all the difference. They’ve truly made my experience unforgettable,” Gutman said. As the Semester keeps moving forward Gutman and the women’s golf team will remain hard at work to do their best to ensure a strong close to what might be the final season of women’s golf here at Sonoma State.
