As the month of March unfolds, Sonoma State University is recognizing Women’s History Month with a series of events to bring the community together and honor influential women who work hard and inspire future generations.
SSU’s commitment to engagement, empowerment, education and advocacy during Women’s History Month shows the ongoing fight for gender equality and the important role that women play in shaping society.
Our local community played a big role in launching a celebration of Women’s History Month. It began in 1978 in Santa Rosa, Calif. with a celebration organized by the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women. By 1980, the movement caught worldwide attention and in 1987 Congress declared March as Women’s History Month.
On Monday, March 10, Seawolf Plaza came alive with music played by DJ Allie hosted by Associated Students, inviting the SSU community to take a midday break and enjoy iconic female artists while engaging in interactive educational activities. It wasn’t just a music break– it was a celebration to honor artistic contributions of women in the music industry.
Yessica Gonsalez, a third-year business management student shared why Women’s History Month holds personal significance for her.
“Women’s history month is important because it makes sure to highlight all of the important women who have fought for our rights. This helps because having this month dedicated to the women who have worked hard for our rights, will continuously shed light on how far women have come,” Gonzalez explained.
For Gonzales, this month is also personal. She gives all her credit to her mother as a major influence in her life, focusing on fostering educational value. “She has always made education in our house be one of the things that comes first and this is why I believe women’s history month is important, to re-discuss the rights that women have fought hard for,” she added.
On March 13, students and staff gathered at the HUB for a luncheon offering a place to celebrate and reflect on resilience and achievements throughout women’s history while enjoying a shared meal. During this activity, attendees had the opportunity to connect with inspiring individuals on campus while having meaningful conversations.
Isabella Page, a junior in early childhood studies, also reflected on the importance of this month and she emphasized the role it brings in educating future generations.
“Women’s history month is important because it provides an opportunity for us to recognize the significant contributions that women have made in history. By celebrating this month for future generations it educates people about the vital role that women have played and continue to play,” Page said.
Page also highlighted the personal impact of a strong woman in her life. “A woman that has impacted my life is my mother because she has inspired me to chase my dreams and has been my number one supporter,” she added.
Throughout discussions, personal reflections, and events, Sonoma State honors Women’s History Month, especially the women who have shaped history and inspire future generations of women. This month does not only celebrate and recognize women, but it is also a call to action to advocate for equality, representation, and empowerment. It is important to acknowledge women’s impact not just in March, but every day of the year.
