On Feb. 11 the Sonoma State Seawolves hosted a doubleheader against Simpson University at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park, California. The Seawolves showcased a strong offensive performance, securing victories in both games.
In the first matchup, Sonoma State’s bats came alive early with the team amassing 15 hits and ultimately winning 11-3. The Seawolves took control in the second inning scoring three runs and continued to build their lead with additional runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
Notably in the third inning Max Shabestri’s single to left field, combined with a fielding error, allowed Joey Replogle and Ben Saitz to score, extending the lead to 5-0. Later, in the fifth inning, Bryson McArn delivered a two-run homer that brought the score to 8-1.
The second game of the double header had a final score of 6-5 with Sonoma State taking the win in extra innings. Sonoma State initially took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to a two-run double by Jacob Courtney. However, Simpson responded in the fifth and sixth innings, capitalizing on a two-run homer by Tafolla and other timely hits to take a 4-2 lead. The Seawolves rallied in the eighth inning, tying the game at 5-5 after Shabestri and McArn scored on a fielding error. The game extended into extra innings where in the bottom of the tenth, Braden Sellz singled to left field, driving in Ryan Tiger for the walk-off win.
These victories improved Sonoma State’s record to 3-5, hoping to provide momentum as they prepared for upcoming games.
The Seawolves struggled offensively in both games, only boasting a total of 3 runs in each game. Sonoma State’s offense was limited in the first game, managing only two hits during the game. The second game of the doubleheader was a more competitive battle with Sonoma State taking the lead early in the 3rd inning up 2-0. Cal State East Bay later rallied in the 7th inning with a 2 run home run from Daniels tying the game 2-2. Finally entering extra innings Cal State East Bay hit a sacrifice rbi to win 5-4. Looking ahead, Sonoma State is scheduled to play Cal State East Bay again Feb. 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond. Fans can follow the game through live streaming video and stats.
