The Intramural Sports program here at Sonoma State allows students to participate in a choice of eleven of their favorite team activities along with a competitive spirit.
The Campus Recreation Center at Sonoma State offers a wide variety of Intramural Sports for students to join and play with their friends or as a free agent. Intramural sports are a way for students who played a sport in the past and want to continue playing at a different level or try a new sport they are interested in.
Mike Dominguez, Lead Recreation Programs and Wellbeing Coordinator is one of the head coordinators for intramural sports communications. He helps students contact team leaders and keeps signing up for each sport as simple as possible.
Dominguez says, “Intramurals are for everybody… they provide an outlet to everyday life by offering students exercise, competitive spirits, and something you don’t have to think about”.
Students can play up to 50 games if they join all eleven sports and tournaments once they pay a flat fee of $15 for an “All Play Pass.” There are championship games at the end of each sports season, and every member of the winning roster receives an intramural championship t-shirt.
Students have two options for joining intramural leagues at Sonoma State. The “Pros League” is designed for those seeking a more competitive edge. Many participants have prior experience, having played their chosen sport in high school or on club teams, making it ideal for athletes with a few years of experience under their belt.
The “Joe’s League” is all about fun and camaraderie. This league is perfect for students trying a sport for the first time or simply looking to enjoy the game without the pressure of intense competition. The focus is on recreation and isn’t as competitive.
Trevin Cholmondeley, a fourth-year Communications major, played flag football and basketball intramural sports last year. He says, “I was excited to have a shot of playing organized sports again… I absolutely would recommend playing intramural sports to students!” Trevin is playing flag football and basketball again this semester in hopes of winning the championship.
Some of the events the “All Play Pass” offers are 6v6 volleyball, doubles spike-ball, 6v6 dodgeball and 5v5 basketball. To view more sports included in the pass, go to the SSU intramural sports section
