College is a transformational time in everyone’s life that is filled with personal growth, unforgettable experiences, and lifelong friendships. However, one aspect that often gets overlooked is the importance of sporting events and the presence of students at these events.
One aspect most represented in media and stereotypes is college sports and the traditions surrounding them. Sonoma State does not participate in this aspect of college life. Whether that’s due to campus size or lack of specific sports on campus, it’s an opportunity that would greatly improve campus morale and sense of community.
Attending sporting events creates a sense of community, especially since Sonoma State is a smaller university, our student body would heavily benefit from supporting our athletic teams more through tailgates. Tailgates consist of lively music, friendly games, enjoyable snacks, and team spirit. These events are a way to foster a sense of community and school pride not only among students but through alumni and fans.
Jesse Lynn, a fourth-year communications major says, “If you look at any big sports school, tailgates are automatic. It’s not just about partying, it’s about hanging out with other students and enjoying the camaraderie that comes with some healthy competition.”
By endorsing tailgate events, it would strengthen the fan base which would then lead to a higher turnout at sporting events. Having a higher turnout at games could also increase how the athletes play throughout the game.
Jose Rios Lara, defensive player on the SSU Men’s Soccer team, shared his thoughts on the presence of students at sporting events “Having support while you’re in the middle of an intense game can completely change the mindset of a player. It feels like motivation is coming from the crowd, we could be exhausted and worn down but hearing the crowd could drive us to make that winning goal.” If we as the fans can motivate and inspire the players to give it their all, then there could be a higher retention amongst the fans and players as they feel supported.
Pack the Den would have been an amazing opportunity for a tailgating event. The average SSU Basketball game has an attendance of 150-200 people, whereas Pack the Den had over 650 people in attendance, according to the SSU website. If SSU had taken this opportunity to have a tailgate beforehand, it might have excited students more before the game, driving more fans to come out and support the team. If Sonoma State takes a stronger approach to creating a more welcoming environment surrounding the athletic department then there would be a higher student involvement.
Scotty Kato, pitcher on the Men’s Baseball team says “Having the support come from than fans could change the game.” Not only will tailgates improve our athletic programs, but having our students engaged with the athletic program will allow them to find a sense of belonging and create memories that will last far longer than their attendance at Sonoma State.
