Having a craving for Mexican food, but not wanting to drive too far or go to Taco Bell? Not a problem for Sonoma State students.
Los Gallos Taqueria, or formerly known as Chunky’s Taqueria and Grill, is located in the Wolf Den Plaza, right across the street from the Sonoma State campus.
A question many students or customers may ask; why change the name of the business? Bankruptcy or terrible brand reputation is a common answer for such a move.
Yelp.com is a well-established website to find restaurants in an area and includes almost every other aspect that makes a restaurant, a restaurant. It includes price range, parking, outside seating, delivery, reservations, waiter services, alcohol options, atmosphere and most customer reviews.
Chunky’s Taqueria and Grill scored an average three out of five on yelp.com. If a student scored a three out of five on every test they had at Sonoma State University, they would be “out of business” or looking for a name change, too.
I recently went to Los Gallos Taqueria with my friends to evaluate the service, quality and various restaurant aspects.
I ordered the super nachos, which comes with choice of meat, cheese, guacamole, salsa and sour cream. I was quite shocked it did not come with beans, an essential ingredient, so I thought.
One thing which is nice about Los Gallos Taqueria is the serve yourself salsa bar; at least my friends and I thought, until we tried the medium salsa.
“It tasted like marinara sauce and salsa combined,” said junior Cameron Davis. “Good thing I tried it at the end of my meal because it made me want to stop eating everything.”
The nachos were made ready in about three minutes, which seemed to be a little skeptical. It could have been mistaken for the same speed as a poor quality fast food restaurant.
“I never really liked Chunky’s. There are a lot better taquerias in Rohnert Park,” said sophomore A.J. Lira. “It is pretty cheap, but the feeling I have in my stomach after I eat it is not worth it.”
Los Gallos Taqueria really did not change many aspects of Chunky’s Taqueria and Grill. The only thing I noticed that was different were the signs on the windows, which read seafood, tacos, burritos, enchiladas, chimichangas, quesadillas, as well as other food, the display of the menu inside the restaurant and obviously the new name.
Their new menu looked tacky and cheap. I could be mistaken, but it looked like the menu was glued on to posters found at a local store. Their new name, Los Gallos, translates to roosters in English.
The overall atmosphere of Los Gallos Taqueria could attract average college students on a tight budget and with a busy lifestyle.
Go in and try it out. Everyone has different opinions, but more importantly different taste buds.
Los Gallos Taqueria is located at 1722 East Cotati Avenue and is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Orders can be called in at (707) 794-1500.
